Havens Wine Cellar

Fans of Portovert know we’re not keen on mass-produced anything. And so, it should come as no surprise, we don’t like our grapes mashed in high volume, either. Sure, there is a not-to-be-named “eco” giant that bottles a whopping 4 million cases a year. But the lackluster swill leaves our taste buds begging for a better bottle. Enter Havens. We recently discovered this family-owned vineyard in the foothills of the Mayacamas in Napa Valley, California. The ten-acre farm is hand-tended, producing 18,000 cases annually. Healthy soils produce stellar wines; we were particularly impressed with the Syrah – an elegant gift for a special occasion. In 2007, the winery decided to take full advantage of the natural sunlight they receive and installed a Sunlight Electric solar power system, which provides 100% of the farms energy. The new system will reduce the overall carbon footprint by 87,000 pounds of CO2 annually -- the equivalent of carbon captured by 12 acres of forest.
